ANXIOUS  GENERATION

Reward-seeking parts of the brain mature earlier. The frontal cortex - essential for self control, delay of gratification and resistance to temptation - is not up to the full capacity until the mid-20s. Pre-teens are particularly vulnerable. As they begin puberty, they are often socially insecure and easily swayed by peer pressure.

The generation born after 1995 is popularly known as generation Z. Generation Z teens got sucked into spending many hours of each day scrolling thru the shiny happy posts of friends,  acquaintances and distant influencers. They spent less time playing with or talking to their friends and families.

Unsupervised outdoor play declined at the same time that the personal computer became more common. There was transition from a "play-based childhood" to a "phone-based childhood". By the mid 2010s most adolescents had their own smartphones. Overprotection in the real world and underprotection in the virtual world - are the reasons why children born after 1995 became the anxious generation. Rates of mental illness went up in so many countries between 2010 and 2015 for generation Z. Smartphones can disrupt the essential face-to-face interaction from which children develop social skills. Free play is essential for developing social skills.
